WW1 - The Men Who Returned
Walter James Chubbock
Private - Service No. G/30166 - The Queen's Regiment
Walter James Chubbock, the son of Walter Thomas Chubbock and his wife Evelyn (Lain), was born 2nd October 1899 at Witton, Norfolk. He was the sixth of twelve children, John (1890), Blanche (1892), Edith (1894), Archibald (1895), Emily (1896), Ella (1901), Charles (1903), George (1905), Alfred, (1907), Miriam (1910) and Faith (1911). Archibald died in 1908 at the age of 13 years. Walter and Evelyn had married in Bunwell, Norfolk in 1889 where they lived, at the Queens Head Inn, for about five years before moving to Wreningham then Blofield and Witton before finally settling in Swardeston around 1902 by which time they had seven children. Evelyn's father, James, was a butcher and this probably prompted Walter to follow this same trade becoming a journeyman butcher which would go some way to explaining the frequent relocations.
On 12th July 1933 Walter married Phoebe Alice Sheppard, daughter of Alfred Sheppard and his wife Sarah (Horton) of Westleton, Suffolk.
Walter and Phoebe had two children, Ivan (1934) and Gill (1944). Both appear to have married and probably had children who may well survive to this day.
Walter Chubbock died in 1st September 1983 and his widow, Phoebe, in 1986, both in Norwich.
Walter joined the 10th Battalion of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment with the rank of private but his army records do not survive. We do know that he was awarded to British War Medal and the Victory Medal in 1919 for his service during WW1 so he saw service abroad but we do not know where or when other than it would have been post 1915.
