WW1 - The Men Who Returned
Clifford Samuel Allison
Private - Service No. 13282 - 8th Battalion Norfolk Regiment
Clifford Samuel Allison, the son of John Allison and his wife Alice Amelia (Chapman), was born 11th May 1896 in Mulbarton, Norfolk. He was the third of ten children, Henry (1893), Raymond (1894), Mabel (1898), Rose (1899), Audrey (1901), John (1904), Frank (1907), Ernest (1908) and Alice (1913). Raymond and Rose both died in early 1900 at the ages of 5 years and just 3 months respectively. John and Alice had married in Lyng, Norfolk in 1891 and lived there for a few years before moving to Mulbarton in 1894, finally settling in Swardeston around 1897.
Clifford joined the 8th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment in 1915 and served in France from the 25th July that year. His army records do not survive but we know he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. It also appears that, at some stage, he transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment before the end of the war and later to the Royal Army Service Corps No.7 Training Unit at Luton, Bedfordshire as a Driver - Service No.163630.
On 26th May 1920 Clifford married a widow, Agnes Marion Rayner (Mann) at the church of St Remigius, Dunston, Norfolk. Agnes was born around 1889 at Keswick, Norfolk, the daughter of Lawson Mann and his wife Mercy (Gooderham) and had married William T Rayner in 1915, in Norwich, but William died in 1919.
Clifford and Agnes had four children, Jack (1922), Clifford (1924), Audrey (1925) and Agnes (1928). All four subsequently married and had children many of whom survive to this day.
